Ranking Every Struts Song That They Released
In July 28 of 2014, 11 years ago it was released the first album from a britanic rock band, The Struts, one of my favorites bands.
I was looking forward to do this blog in which what is my opinion about each song they released and which I'll be giving positions from my less favorite to the one that I most adore, so for this special occasion of which this band denies that the original version of their first album ever existed (probably not, but promotional material as well as the 10th anniversary tour tells me otherwise), here's all songs from The Struts ranked.
Covers don't count, neither remastered songs, only the songs themselves.
58. Young Stars
(Everybody Wants, 2016)
Starting with a song from the reissue, it's hard to catalog it bad because, it isn't, in fact it has incredible lyrics about the artist's growth but still, I don't know exactly my problem with it but this is the ONLY song from The Struts that makes me feel it's not from them, which it's good for every musician but this is unique in a different way of which makes me feel indifferent.
Maybe it sounds a bit generic or mid? I'm not sure. Not a song that I would want to listen more than twice, but still to be last place and still being incredible in certain aspects like vocals, the lyrics and the guitar solo are a sign that we are talking about a great band that you've never heard of.
57. The Ol' Switcheroo
(Everybody Wants, 2016)
This was at one point one of my favorites from the reissue but now, uh, lets say that my tastes have changed. It's catchy and all that well written but I prefer their other songs, that just my opinion.
Call it bad take but you should still keep reading this and you'll be surprised that, the amount of quality this band has on each song is incredible, so, yeah... now nobody's blue.
56. These Times Are Changing
(Everybody Wants, 2016)
You might be thinking that I'm hating every new song from the reissue but let me explain. This song is basically the other "Young Stars" but with a little more flavor and addicting to listen to. I used to like this song but not by much now.
The lyrics are simpler but like that it matters to me, at least a better combination is an excellent composition and excellent lyrics, and this case the composition is heavier than the lyrics from the other song.
55. Fallin' With Me
(Single, 2022)
It's one of those songs that I feel like it has been ruined thanks to the studio version because I first listened it from a recording of a live performance of this song being played for the first time (I think) and sounded incredible there.
Makes up for being catchy anyways, but I really wanted to listen a better version that I would rather listen to the live performance. Maybe it's a special case of being the first composed song since the new label, but still give it a chance, it's still pretty good.
54. Cool
(Strange Days, 2020)
A very curious case, we are talking about one of their most longest songs they have, in fact it sounds like a great concert. It used to be one of my favorites from the third album but it isn't now unfortunately. Give a listen still, this song is definitely cool.
53. Where Did She Go
(Everybody Wants, 2014 & 2016)
Fun fact: this song was made originally from the mid 2000's, from an older band that Luke Spiller used to be part of, in fact the original song can be found on YouTube, that band was called "Flukestar".
Where Did She Go is full of emotion and furor that makes it accordingly a great closure to the first album. I don't have much to say except that I prefer their other songs, that's all.
52. Remember The Name
(Pretty Vicious, 2023)
The Ol' Switcheroo if it was based. But seriously, it's not my cup of tea but there are many parts from the song that is delightful to listen to so it's deserving to be this higher on this ranking, and remember, none of these are bad songs that have been demonstrated so, listen it if none of the previous entries haven't convinced you.
51. Wild Child
(Strange Days, 2020)
The intensity in this song is indisputable, but not entirely for my liking I don't really know but that shouldn't stop you, give it a listen because it could be your new favorite song!
50. Fire (Part 1)
(Young & Dangerous, 2018)
So epic, and another demonstration of Luke's incredible voice. If this is one of your favorites, don't worry because you should know that this is my list, and you could make yours too! and I can see why this is a favorite for many people because it's tremendous.
I can tell already that the second album is their best one, at least in my opinion.
49. Low Key In Love
(Single, 2021)
Another song that I feel like it got ruined because of the studio version, but nonetheless the inclusion of a talented singer and Michael Jackson's daughter makes this song a favorite for many people.
48. Roll Up
(Everybody Wants, 2014 & 2016)
Now we're getting to the stuff that I would listen more than thrice. The first song listed on their first album and, what an introduction.
I like a lot the sound of this, especially the chorus and the guitar solo.
Underrated song from an underrated band.
47. Put Your Hands Up
(Everybody Wants (Japanese edition), 2016)
A very catchy and danceable song, I don't know what Luke did there but this is one of his best vocals.
By the way, this song originally was planned to be released by the end of 2011 but internal problems from the band caused that not only this song wasn't launched that time (including more songs that never got a release) but also caused that the previous bassist and drummer left the band.
46. She Makes Me Feel Like
(Everybody Wants, 2014 & 2016)
I rather listen to the original version from 2014 than the remastered version because: it sounds so low energy, and that's something that The Struts are very good at but this seems like an exception. If you have the opportunity, listen the original version.
This is one of their songs that feels like from their old songs that they wrote and performed in 2011, pure unadulterated Struts classic.
45. Could Have Been Me
(Everybody Wants, 2014 & 2016)
Were you expecting this higher on the list, right? look, this song is a iconic masterpiece and all but, I have my all time favorites and yours too.
It's so funny to me that once a while this song gets recognition from everywhere like if it was launched yesterday, showing how great this song is for the masses.
44. Only Just A Call Away
(Everybody Wants, 2016)
This was one of my favorites during the time when I first discovered this band, and it seems that it isn't anymore but it's still an amazing song every time I come back to listen to it, only just that it looses me with the chorus that, I'm not saying that it's terrible because the rest of the song is epic both vocals and instrumentation. If you have the opportunity give it a chance.
43. I Hate How Much I Want You
(Strange Days, 2020)
I hate how much I like this song, but it's true. It was one of my favorites from the album when I first heard it the day when it got uploaded on YouTube. With the collaboration of two great rock musicians makes this song a gem.
42. Tatler Magazine
(Young & Dangerous, 2018)
This one seems to me in particular that it's full of personality. For a song being written in the middle of a plane trip shows the raw talent this band has.
41. All Dressed Up (With Nowhere To Go)
(Strange Days, 2020)
I don't have much to comment but the retro style of this song makes it a gem already. In general, everything about their third album have a retro style, making it very unique. Catchy song too, listen to it!
40. Burn It Down
(Strange Days, 2020)
I prefer this a bit more than the other song already mentioned since that this sometimes it's really catchy for being a slow song, and some parts definitely makes me want to sing.
39. One Night Only
(Single, 2017)
I keep forgetting that this song exists for some reason, but it's not because I want to forget it, probably because the fact that it feels like a fever dream listening to it.
If Queen lasted more decades to writing new songs probably one of them would be like this.
A good song like this it's hard to believe it exists but it does.
38. Rockstar
(Pretty Vicious, 2023)
This song was gonna be one of their singles from their first album until, well, it got replaced with songs like Put Your Money On Me and Dirty Sexy Money.
After more than 10 years it got a comeback and finally it launched as a single and then for the fourth album, and it's still a bop to listen to.
37. 21st Century Dandy
(Everybody Wants (Japanese edition), 2016)
I love the sound of this, it's kind of a mix of Roll Up and a bit of My Machine. So exciting to listen to for an only japan exclusive song, and even it was given FREE for Funko's cereals, that's so funny but hey, I would be happy if I had this song for free from a cereal.
36. Kiss This
(Everybody Wants, 2014 & 2016)
The most catchiest song they ever wrote?? I'm not sure about that but I want to believe it. Give it a listen if you haven't, please! you won't regret it.
35. How Can I Love You? (Without Breaking Your Heart)
(Single, 2024)
A song this beautiful cannot be lower than this spot. Loved all of these newer tracks they released that makes me happy that this band is still this great.
34. I Just Know
(Single, 2012)
I just adore the intensity that this song has. Fans says "how bad, the vocals from this girl on the chorus ruins it" but I don't think it's terrible, for a first song it's really really good.
33. People
(Young & Dangerous, 2018)
This song is what Young Stars should have been in my opinion. I stopped to listen this song a long time ago and now that I revisited it for this ranking it surprised me again at the tremendous quality this has that I wanted to sing it again the more I keep listening it.
Definitely give it a listen.
32. Another Hit Of Showmanship
(Strange Days, 2020)
Despite that this one sounds more or less "generic", it's very catchy to sing. One of my favorites from the third album.
31. Matter Of Time
(Kiss This EP, 2014)
This song deserves more recognition, despite the fact that it came out on a EP is a fairly high caliber, demonstrating once more how incredible this band is.
30. Doin' Time
(Kiss This EP, 2014)
Speaking of the same EP, another original song that I think it's so catchy and full of energy. The riff in this song is one of my favorites, which is this band's expertise. Probably their most underrated song.
29. Freak Like You
(Young & Dangerous, 2018)
This song puts Young Stars and The Ol' Switcheroo in shame. Sorry for roasting those songs in particular but really this second album is a total upgrade in any sense, IMO. The keys, sax, and the last part are what makes this a joy to listen to.
28. Put Your Money On Me
(Everybody Wants, 2014 & 2016)
Instant classic once you start listening right on the first few seconds, you're gonna love it. I love the fact that some of their most popular songs has to be this one and it deserves it. But, you might be thinking, why is it not higher on the list? because I have my favorites, duh!
27. Body Talks
(Young & Dangerous, 2018)
The first single of the second album, and it's so, so catchy. I don't have much to comment other than, they killed with the vocals the best way possible. Excellent song.
I prefer more the solo version than the collab with Kesha, but that version still it's not bad, it commits to be a pop song and it's all good to be a bit different.
26. In Love With A Camera
(Young & Dangerous, 2018)
Another song from the second album (and single) of high caliber. The instrumentation, the lyrics, and of course, the vocals, are a complete delight. I could repeat this song from time to time without any hassle.
25. Can't Sleep
(Strange Days, 2020)
Very catchy and full of life. Every time that I hear it after a long time it becomes one of my favorites, it's that incredible.
24. Do What You Want
(Pretty Vicious, 2023)
Another incredible song from the fourth album, although just like each song that I mentioned where those gave me a better impression the first time I listened to them from live recordings, I prefer the original when it was once called "Nobody Does It Like You". But like I said, it's incredible and it always be.
23. Too Good At Raising Hell
(Pretty Vicious, 2023)
A pretty good song (the usual from this band) but what surprises is that this is one of their most recent songs and yet be this excellent. The second half isn't entirely my favorite but the rest makes me want to sing it.
It sounds like a song released from the first half of the 2000's from a legendary rock band and I'm all for it!
22. Somebody New
(Young & Dangerous, 2018)
Another song that Young Stars should have been, and sounds more iconic on its own, like if it was from the 80's or 90's but remastered, something that this band are capable of. One of their best gems.
21. Primadonna Like Me
(Young & Dangerous, 2018)
To me this song describes exactly what they are, a fantastic band with a fantastic sound. Equally as Somebody New sounds like it's from decades ago. If I could introduce someone this band, it'll be this. Definitely they were cooking with this one.
20. Pretty Vicious
(Pretty Vicious, 2023)
This song was intended to be released years ago but the pandemic ruined their timing, making them leave and join to their new label of which they got better results being that they're getting the support they deserve.
That said, I don't know about you but I liked a lot more the version that they were cooking before leaving Interscope, the song's still incredible either way.
An old recording from them singing live on August 2021 sounded the song the best but sadly the uploaded for some reason got deleted their account for copyright which... uh... now people can't share their experiences on concerts? Seems like it because another account that had a HUGE amount of recordings of the band also got deleted, and that user was called "WAPSoltis", what a shame...
Sorry for the tangent but that makes me furious. I would kill to listen to that recording again.
19. Can't Stop Talking
(Single, 2024)
To be the most recent song (as the time I'm writing this) this high up on the list and the fact that this song so simple is in this position. Yes, I wrote that but in a different form on the same sentence but give me a break.
A song so catchy like this one and well produced from this new label deserves a better spot, well done guys!
18. Black Swan
(Everybody Wants, 2014 & 2016)
Definition of underrated.
Incredible song from start to finish: from the instrumentation, the vocals, the lyrics, the composition, everything. I'm so glad that this song written by both Adam and Luke from 2011 and launched on the first album in 2014 has been re-released on the reissue from 2016 because really it is so incredible.
17. Better Love
(Pretty Vicious, 2023)
Very catchy song as usual from The Struts but this one sounds a bit like something from the 90's, so classy. Hard to resist to not singing it.
16. Bulletproof Baby
(Young & Dangerous, 2018)
I don't see what's the problem with a few people when this was released that it sounded "modern" like if it was something bad. For me it sounds spectacular. They experimented on the second album with each song (a thing of everyday from this band) and this wouldn't be an exception, and to me that makes them sound more fresh and contemporaries than ever.
That for me, how risky its execution is that makes it unique. My favorite part is the second half, my ears adore it.
15. Gimme Some Blood
(Pretty Vicious, 2023)
Another goal from this fourth album, one of my favorites from it as well. Catchy, hard to resist to sing and to keep it on repeat.
14. I Do It So Well
(Young & Dangerous, 2018)
One of their most different sounding songs they've ever done, and they achieved it big time. I became a fan immediately of this song the first time I heard it. Never fails to make me start singing.
13. Strange Days
(Strange Days, 2020)
One of Luke's best vocals, and the inclusion of Robbie Williams makes it one of their best singles they ever composed, and to me it's like to be standing up and start clapping by that magnitude of a song.
12. Mary Go Round
(Everybody Wants, 2016)
So inspiring that I always sing it when I listen to it, always. This must be the usual from my favorite songs, and this one is such no exception, such incredible song from start to finish!
I told you that I'm not "hating" every new song from the reissue!
11. You & I
(Everybody Wants, 2014)
A very special song for me for some reason, I don't know, it sounds so nice even from this band but here's the thing: this one sounds something that they DID, and has all my respect.
I adore the lyrics of this song, and the great instrumentation and specially the vocals! that does a better balance than any new song from the reissue convinced me the same way. It'll remain one of my favorites from this band until the end of time.
10. Dirty Sexy Money
(Everybody Wants, 2014 & 2016)
Very catchy, so catchy from minute 0:00 to 3:58, they made a disco song this good that puts any from that genre feel like the ripoffs, that's how excellent this song is.
I started to be very addicted to this song lately so it could explain how high this got on the list but nonetheless I would put this on a higher position any day!
9. Ashes (Part 2)
(Young & Dangerous, 2018)
Objectively one of their best songs they've ever composed. It's not something that I would listen on repeat but I had to place this higher on the ranking, I'd be stupid if I didn't, wouldn't it?
8. Heaven's Got Nothing On You
(Single, 2024)
Another refreshing song that, even if it is simpler for Struts standards, somehow it's so catchy, man! I can't get enough of this one, so addicting to listen to and sing it all the way.
7. I Won't Run
(Pretty Vicious, 2023)
You should listen to this, it's so special and inspiring. A masterpiece of a song.
6. Am I Talking To The Champagne (Or Talking To You)
(Strange Days, 2020)
A song that NEVER fails me to sing from start to finish of how thrilling it is that cannot be compared, goosebumps guaranteed.
Not only one of their best songs from the third album but also personally it's one of my favorites from this band.
5. Hands On Me
(Pretty Vicious, 2023)
I really adore the lyrics and above all the chorus. Once more another sign of this album being this high quality.
4. Who Am I?
(Young & Dangerous, 2018)
One of the best things I've ever listen to from start to finish. The disco style from like Dirty Sexy Money makes a comeback but to me this has more layers that makes me want to listen to this song indefinitely nonstop.
Instrumentation is a complete bomb, and Luke finishes it with his voice. One of the most underappreciated Struts songs, and it makes me sad that they stopped playing it live.
3. Let's Make This Happen Tonight
(Everybody Wants, 2014)
Every time I listen to it always makes me to sing, it's a joy for me even by the fact that it's so simplistic in comparison to the amazing catalog this band offers but this one stole my heart.
Both the riff, lyrics and the way Luke sings always makes me want to listen to this song again and again, it never gets old even if I heard it first time in 2019, becoming one of my favorites of all time.
This stopped being played live around 2017 which lasted longer than You & I and My Machine from the same album, maybe they seemed to like to perform this song. Notoriously so that their performance whenever they played this song was in another level like, at one point they "freeze" in front of the audience and it's incredible, you should watch those recordings, or better yet, you should go watch them live!
Definitely one of their most underestimated songs.
2. Bad Decisions
(Pretty Vicious, 2023)
One of their best period. From the unique and incredible voice from Luke, the melodies and the pure artistry makes it a total classic for me, and as usual with some of the previous entries, I sing it when I listen to it, it never gets old.
This deserves to be a hit.
1. My Machine
(Everybody Wants, 2014 & 2016 Japanese edition)
And now here's the reason why this ranking exists in the first place: not only this song is a treat to listen to from start to finish, but also the amazing vocals, the lyrics, everything, and its history behind it makes me appreciate it more than necessary.
This song was composed since 2011 same way as Black Swam and Rockstar, this however was a bit unlucky to ending up Japanese exclusive only in 2016 which in my opinion is less good. Not in a same degree as the remastered version of She Makes Me Feel Like but still I'll pick the original version without thinking.
With how many layers has this song musically describes to me how capable they are the moment they compose a song, but this song's energy is in another whole level that would put in shame ANY song that I've listened.
Definitely, absolutely one of my favorites of all time, let alone my favorite from The Struts.
So, that's the ranking, what do you think? Took me a lot to write this in English, I wish I could write stuff like I want to but then no one could read this. At some point I'd be tired and start to write my blogs in plain Spanish but yeah.
As you can see probably I'm giving a lot of credit to this band and maybe you won't think this was that special after you listen their songs, but that's totally ok. In fact, I encourage you to do a ranking like this with not this band, ANY artist, not only exclusive to the music world, or, yell at me for not liking your favorite song idk.
See you next time! where I'll write something way different.
